Pencarrow Coast Road, Eastbourne, Lower Hutt 5013, New Zealand

The 7km coastal track from Eastbourne to New Zealand's first permanent lighthouse — once tended by the country's only female lighthouse keeper, Mary Jane Bennett. Wild coastline, native seabirds, and views across Cook Strait to the South Island. Keep going past the lighthouse to reach Lake Kohangatera for eels, waterfowl, and serious tranquility. Allow four hours return on foot or ninety minutes by bike. Be warned — the southerlies can be fierce out here.
