Beachfront institution on the Esplanade in Petone. Live music, cold beers, fish and chips, and views straight out over the harbour to the city. Summer in the Wellington region distilled into one venue. The kind of place that captures everything good about a sunny afternoon — salt air, live tunes, a cold drink, and nowhere else you'd rather be. Worth the trip to Petone every single time.

Flight Coffee roasts some of the best beans in the country, and their Hangar café on Dixon Street is the perfect place to taste them. Airy, spacious, and designed to let the coffee do the talking. Order the filter if you really want to appreciate what they do — the single origins are outstanding. This is where Wellington's coffee obsession makes perfect sense. Serious beans, served with serious care, in a space that matches.

Healthy, wholesome food that actually tastes amazing — The Oatery on Left Bank is proof that eating well doesn't mean sacrificing flavour. Porridge bowls elevated to an art form, smoothies packed with goodness, and a menu that makes you feel genuinely good about what you're putting in your body. The kind of place where the food is as nourishing as it is delicious. A quiet hero of Wellington's café scene.

Wellington's most exciting new café on Allen Street. Colourful lattes that taste as good as they look, and a pastry cabinet that'll stop you mid-stride — croissant cubes, tiramisu cruffins, and creations that push the boundaries of what a bakery can be. Every item is a work of art, and the quality matches the presentation. This is the future of Wellington coffee culture — bold, creative, and absolutely worth queuing for.

A sleek, modern eatery on Cornwall Street in Lower Hutt, bringing creative brunch and lunch dishes to the Hutt Valley. Beautiful plating, unexpected flavour combos, and a fresh, inviting space that makes you want to linger. The weekend crowd loves it, and for good reason — the menu pushes boundaries while still feeling approachable. One of the Hutt's best new additions and proof the food scene out here is thriving.

A journey through the world of chocolate on Jackson Street in Petone — from bean to bar. Interactive tastings, fascinating history, and more samples than you can handle. The perfect rainy day activity for families or anyone with a sweet tooth. You'll leave knowing your cacao percentages and your tempering techniques, and probably carrying a bag full of chocolate. A sweet day out on one of the Hutt's most charming streets.

The neighbourhood cinema done right, on The Parade in Island Bay. Boutique screens, proper food and drinks delivered to your seat, and a programme that mixes blockbusters with indie gems and arthouse picks. Movie nights elevated beyond the multiplex experience — think craft beer, wine, and actual food instead of just popcorn. The kind of cinema that makes going to the movies feel special again. Island Bay's pride and joy.

Raising the bar for baking in Wellington from their Berhampore base on Adelaide Road. Flaky croissants that shatter on the first bite, sourdough that crackles perfectly, and pastries that look almost too good to eat — almost. The cabinet doesn't stay full for long, so early birds get rewarded. Gramercy is proof that great baking doesn't need a CBD address — the southern suburbs are quietly leading Wellington's bakery renaissance.

A refined neighbourhood eatery on Taranaki Street that's quickly become one of Wellington's most talked-about spots. Thoughtful, produce-driven dishes with European flair, served in a warm and inviting space. The menu changes with the seasons, the wine list is smart, and every plate arrives looking like it belongs in a magazine — but without the attitude. The kind of restaurant every suburb wishes it had.

Coffee Supreme's flagship café on Ghuznee Street — where Wellington's coffee obsession lives and breathes. A communal table down the middle, a north-facing footpath that catches all the sun, and a reputation that draws locals and visitors alike. At Customs, you can't be incognito — you always bump into someone you know, and that's the fun. The food menu is seriously good too. This is why Wellington is New Zealand's coffee capital.

One of Wellington's most photographed spots — those colourful boat sheds lined up along Oriental Bay against the harbour. They're pure Wellington charm, and the backdrop for about half the city's Instagram posts. Grab a coffee from one of the nearby cafes, find a bench, and watch the world go by with the harbour sparkling behind you. Simple, iconic, and the perfect postcard moment any time of day.

Cuba Street institution for decades and still going strong. Revolutionary décor, strong coffee, and generous brunch plates that keep Wellingtonians coming back every weekend. The cabinet is always loaded, the atmosphere is always buzzing, and the outdoor tables on Wigan Street are prime people-watching territory. Some cafes ride trends — Fidel's just keeps being Fidel's, and that's exactly why it works.

Good things come in converted containers. The Jessie Street café has built a loyal following through consistently excellent cabinet food, great coffee, and that industrial-meets-cosy atmosphere that just works. Whether it's a quick takeaway flat white or a proper sit-down lunch, Prefab delivers every time. One of Wellington's best all-rounders — reliable, delicious, and always busy for good reason.

Tucked away on Tinakori Road in Thorndon, Hillside is the kind of neighbourhood restaurant every suburb wishes it had. The seasonal menu changes regularly and everything tastes like someone genuinely cared about making it — because they did. The wine list is thoughtful, the atmosphere is warm, and the quality punches well above what you'd expect from a quiet suburban street. A true local gem.
Hillside Kitchen

Wellington's beloved independent bookshop on Willis Street, and one of the last truly great ones. Expertly curated shelves, knowledgeable staff who've actually read what they recommend, and a commitment to great literature that's kept this store at the heart of the city's cultural life for decades. In a world of algorithms and one-click ordering, Unity reminds you what a bookshop should feel like. Essential.

The menu changes with what's best, the drinks list is smart and well-matched, and the atmosphere invites you to linger. Smooth, approachable roasts from the legendary Raglan crew, now pouring on the Wellington waterfront at Chaffers Dock. If you like your coffee without pretension but with plenty of flavour, this is your spot. The team here are always happy to talk beans, the vibe is laid-back, and the waterfront location is hard to beat on a sunny morning. Raglan quality, Wellington convenience.

L'affare has been part of Wellington's coffee story since before specialty coffee was even a thing. The College Street roastery and café is an institution — watch the roasters at work through the glass while you drink some of NZ's most recognised coffee. The space is bright, the coffee is consistently excellent, and the history runs deep. If Wellington is the coffee capital of New Zealand, L'affare is one of the founding families.

One thing, done brilliantly — pies. Proper, flaky, loaded-with-filling pies that rank among the best in New Zealand. The pastry shatters, the fillings are generous, and the pickles on the side are the perfect match. Lombard Street lunchtime traffic jams when word gets around a new flavour has dropped. Simple, satisfying, and the reason pie purists keep coming back. No fancy plating needed when the product is this good.

A hidden gem on Cuba Street for anyone who appreciates beautifully crafted natural skincare and wellness products. Locally made, thoughtfully sourced, and housed in a gorgeous little shop that smells incredible the moment you walk in. The kind of place where self-care stops being a buzzword and starts being something you actually look forward to. A Wellington original doing natural beauty the right way.
