Te Wharewaka o Poneke

2 Taranaki Street, Wellington Central, Wellington 6011, New Zealand

Home to three traditionally carved waka, housed in a stunning building designed like a korowai (cloak). Owned and operated by local iwi Te Āti Awa, the waka tours get you out on the harbour learning paddling commands, chants, and haka — proper hands-on cultural immersion. Opened on Waitangi Day 2011 and sitting right between Te Papa and the waterfront. Pop into Karaka Café afterwards for kai with a Māori twist.
