A Wellington icon since 1902 — NZ's only remaining funicular railway. The five-minute ride climbs 120 metres from Lambton Quay through three tunnels and over three bridges to Kelburn. At the top: panoramic harbour views, the Botanic Garden, Carter Observatory, the Cable Car Museum, and a free shuttle to Zealandia. Originally steam-powered, now electric, and still the best way to get a feel for this city. Walk down through the garden afterwards — trust us.
